Metric formula
For standard metric cut taps, the quick shop formula is major diameter minus pitch. M8 x 1.25 gives 8.00 - 1.25 = 6.75 mm, usually rounded to a 6.8 mm drill.
Use the calculator when the tap size is known and you need the starting drill size. The table keeps common values nearby so the calculated size can be checked against shop references.
